Power and Authority

Power and Authority

In Luke’s Gospel chapter 9 v 1 & 2 we read about  Jesus“ Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick .“

This is where Jesus after equipping the disciples for 2 years was now handing over the Power and Authority, to utilise and enforce the kingdom of God. The Power is the ability and the Authority is the permission.

There are 4 realms to work in

  • The natural realm: earlier in the previous chapter (8:22) we see Jesus calming the storm.
  •   The spiritual realm: next  (8:26) Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man in the Gadarenes.
  • Sickness and disease: next (8 v 43) a woman who had spent all her livelihood on physicians was healed of a flow of blood of 12 years.
  • Death:  next (v 49) Jairus`s daughter is raised from the dead.

So Jesus had just given demonstrations of the power of God and was now giving them the authority to continue the work .

I had the privilege of being taught temporarily by a wonderful man who came to tutor at Creative Word Bible college, by the name of Ken Hepworth, whose book, “Reclaiming the Ground“ is highly recommended. Well he gave a wonderful analogy of the “Power and Authority “by saying, Mike Tyson undoubtedly in his day had the power to beat a man. I think his nickname was The Power too , but he couldn’t just walk down the street and beat any man to a pulp. He had to wait until he was in the boxing ring. At a specified time, when he was then given the authority, the permission to do what he had been trained to do.

So we need to get hold of these truths, that by operating under the spirit of God, we can move in God’s might and power in these areas to bring glory to God .

Even more so, as Jesus goes onto saying in the gospel of John 14:12 “Most assuredly I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do , because I go to My Father.“

 Amen.

Bertie also got some authority today, (or I got some on his behalf) This Sunday we are on the road, heading south to go to France. After a course of injections with no side effects, he now has a passport! So he now has the authority, the permission to cross the channel as my ever faithful companion.

God bless
