Jesus said “Come to Me, Learn from Me, And I will give you rest“
Hi, I trust you are all well, and those who are partaking of the reading of the Bible alongside us are not finding the pace too arduous. After only 4 days we are 1/16th of the way there! (Well 2/33rd really, if I am going to be precise). We have read Genesis and are a good way through Exodus already.
Today, after my studying, a couple of friends have been on my mind. 2 Davids, both of whom I know as I have had the privilege of working alongside them on a Monday evening at Bridges. Both for very different reasons.
This afternoon I saw some local older men congregating together near a roundabout as we were heading for the supermarket. On our return we decided to draw nearer to see what was going on. Aha, I thought, they are playing bowls. I have a friend, Mr Dave Ashton who enjoys partaking in a game of bowls.
I shall see what it is all about! This, however was boules. A completely different sort. They appeared not to need the comfort of perfectly manicured grass under their feet or for the rolling and passage of the bowl. No, it appeared that a stony, gravel and sand car park was comfortable for their feet and direction of their boules. Throw in negotiating the loose chippings, puddles and stones in their path and you have the picture.
Another couple of observations that were quite obvious was the weight of these little boules. Though smaller than a bowls ball they had a distinct metallic sound as they clunked together. Not made of precision lathed wood. The other distinction was this type of player was obviously less energetic, as not one of the players required any type of refreshing ale to slurp on between shots. Even more, there was not even a pub in sight!
The other Dave I had on my mind was Mr Baker or Digger Dave. Tomorrow night, Breakspear Inc are showing their film, “Jerusalem or Bust“ at Champness Hall.
I know Dave has been instrumental in this venture with his good friend Nick Breakspear. Nick is a creative artist and musician and I would like to take this opportunity to wish them both every success and blessing. (If you haven’t seen the film, click here. Jerusalem or bust is the name of the film, or contact Mr Dave Baker).
I have a picture here with me of Dave at this desk/table, it says simply, Jesus said “Come to Me .. learn from Me …And I will give you rest“
In the gospel of Matthew 11:28–30, we find the fuller version “Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light “.
I don’t have the time or space to give a full breakdown of this scripture, but I found this piece as part of a bigger broken piece behind a church on the scrapheap waiting to be collected. I chopped it into this smaller section and took it home. My home is now wherever I lay my hat, so its here with me. I was drawn incredibly by this piece of scripture, I would stare at this for ages, taking it in.
Jesus said …. Meant that this was important, quite simply, if Jesus said it, its important.
Come to Me ….. Meant, trust in Me, Believe Me.
Learn from Me…. Meant, Listen to Me. Take My words. Follow Me.
And I will give you rest … Meant, the rest you will get from Coming to Me, Learning from Me, is not the rest you get from tired bodies and aching limbs, or minds. But the rest that your wandering soul has been searching for. For Jesus is The hope of Glory and only He is the Way. There is no other name under heaven or earth on which we can call to be saved.
