NAMES FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

Some names from the bible and their Hebrew meaning. I have include these definitions as they help to give an understanding of the character of the name.

  • Aaron = A mountain of strength. The man who was an excellent speaker. Ex
  • Abel = meadow, vanity of vapour. The man who was first to die. Gen 4.1
  • Abiathar = Excellent father . 1 Sam 22
  • Abigail = Cause of joy. The woman with beauty and brains. 1 Sam 25
  • Abihu = He is my father. destroyed for offering unauthorised fire on the altar. Ex 6
  • Abimelech = Father of the king. The man who rebuked another for lying. Gen 20
  • Abner = Father of light. The man who was destitute of lofty ideals .1 Sam 14
  • Abram/ Abraham = Father of a multitude. The man who was Gods friend. Gen 11
  • Achan = Trouble . The man who brought trouble to a nation. Josh 7
  • Achish = Serpent charmer . 1 Sam 21
  • Achsah = Adorned or bursting the veil. The woman who wanted more. Josh 4
  • Adam = Of the ground of red earth. The man God made. Gen 1
  • Adoni Zedek = Lord of justice. Josh 10
  • Ahimelech = Brother of the king . 1 Sam 21
  • Asher = Happy. Gen 30
  • Balaam . A pilgrim. The man who heard an ass speak. Num 22
  • Barak = Pilgrim. The man who heard an ass speak. Num 22
  • Benjamin = Son of my right hand. The man beloved of Jehovah. Gen 35
  • Bezaleel = Under Gods shadow. The man who was a spirit filled workman. Ex 31
  • Cain = Fabrication or possessed. The man who was earths, first murderer. Gen 4
  • Caleb = Bold , impetuous . The man who desired a mountain. Num 13
  • Dan = He that judges. The man whose name is blotted out. Gen 30
  • Eleazar = God is helper. 3rd son of Aaron. A priest. Chief Levite. Ex 6
  • Delilah = delicate or dainty one. The woman who betrayed her husband for silver. Judg 16
  • Deborah = A bee. The woman who was a fearless patriot. Judg 4,5
  • Dinah = Justice. The woman whose sightseeing had fatal results. Gen 34
  • Doeg = Timid or fearful . 1 Sam 22
  • Ehud = Strong or Union. The man who was left handed. Judg 3
  • Eleazer = God is helper. Ex 28
  • Eli = Jehovah is high or My God. The man who lacked parental authority . 1 Sam 1
  • Eliab = God is a father . 1 Sam 1
  • Elkanah = God hath created or Is jealous . 1 Sam 1
  • Enoch = Teacher / dedicated . The man who was missed. Gen 4
  • Ephraim = Doubly fruitful. The man who represented fruitful pruning. Gen 41
  • Esau = Hairy. The man who sold his birthright. Gen 25
  • Eve = Woman . The woman of unique distinction. Gen 2
  • Gaal = Rejection or contempt . Judg 9
  • Gad = Good fortune. The man of enlargement. Gen 30
  • Gershom = A stranger there. !st son of Moses and Zipporah. Ex 2
  • Gershon = A stranger there. Eldest son of Levi. Gen 46
  • Gideon = He that bruises or Great warrior. The man of might and valour. Judg 6,7,8.
  • Goliath = Exile or soothsayer. The man a pebble killed . 1 Sam 17
  • Hagar = Flight . The woman who lost a bottle but found a will. Gen 16
  • Ham = Hot or dark. The man whose sin brought a curse. Gen 5
  • Hannah = Gracious. The woman who personifies ideal motherhood . 1 Sam 1
  • Hophni = Strong . 1 Sam 1
  • Hur = Noble or splendour. The man with Aaron held up Moses hands. Ex 17
  • Isaac = He laugheth. The man whose birth caused a laugh. Gen 17
  • Issachar = There is here or reward. The man who couched down. Gen 30
  • Ishmael = God heareth. The man who became an outcast. Gen 16
  • Ithamar = Palm coast or tree. Youngest son of Aaron. Ex 6
  • Jael = Wild or mountain goat. The woman who killed a man whilst he slept. Judg 4
  • Jesse = Jehovah exists. Ruth 4
  • Jethro = Pre eminence or excellence. Father in law of Moses. Ex 3
  • Japeth = Beauty. Let him enlarge or him that persuades. Gen 5
  • Jared = Descending or he that descends. Gen 5
  • Joash = Jehovah supports. Judg 6
  • Jonathan = The Lord gave. Judg 17
  • Jotham = Jehovah is upright. Judg 9
  • Joseph = May God add or increase. The man whose dream came true. Gen 30
  • Joshua = Jehovah is salvation. The man who was a soldier saint. Num 13
  • Judah = Object of praise / of the Lord. The man who was praised. Gen 29
  • Korah = Baldness or icy. Son of Esau founder of a tribe. Gen 36
  • Laban = White or glorious. Gen 24
  • Leah = Wearied. The woman lacking loveliness was yet loyal. Gen 29
  • Levi = Joined of adhesion. The man of isolation. Gen 29
  • Lot = Concealed or myrrh. The man with a worldly mind. Gen 11
  • Mannaseh = Causing forgetfulness . Gen 41
  • Manoah = Rest or Quiet. Judg 14
  • Merari = Bitter or unhappy. 3rd son of Levi. Gen 46
  • Michal =  Who is like Jehovah. The woman who tricked her father . 1 Sam 14
  • Micah = Who is like Jehovah. The man of strong convictions. judg 17
  • Moab = Water of a father. The son of Lot. Gen 19
  • Moses = Drawn forth from water. The man who was Gods friend. Ex 2
  • Nabal = Prominence or foolish. The man who was a fool by name and nature . 1 Sam 25
  • Nadab = Of ones free will. Destroyed for offering strange fire at the altar. Ex 6
  • Noah = Rest . The man who built the Ark. Gen 5
  • Othniel = powerful one or Lion of God. Josh 15
  • Phinehas = Face of trust or mouth of a serpent . 1 Sam 1
  • Potiphar = Who is of the son or a fat bull. Gen 37
  • Puah = Child bearing or joy of parents. Ex 1
  • Rahab = Fierceness . The woman God took from the dunghill. Josh 2
  • Rachel = Ewe.The woman in whom romance and tragedy were blended. Gen 29
  • Rebekah = Tied up. The woman whose favouritism brought sorrow. Gen 22
  • Reuben = A son of vision or of the son. The man of forfeited privileges. Gen 49
  • Samson = Distinguished, strong or sun-man. The man of contrasts. Judg 13-16
  • Sarai / Sarah = Commander . The woman who became mother of nations. Gen 11
  • Saul = Asked or Demanded. A man who lost his kingdom . 1 Sam
  • Shem = Renown or name. Gen 5
  • Simeon = Hearing and obeying. The man who was self willed. Gen 29
  • Sisera = Meditation, battle array or Sees a horse. Judg 4
  • Tamar = The woman with a pathetic history. Gen 38
  • Zalmunna = Shelter is denied. Judg 8
  • Zebah = Victim or Sacrifice. Judg 8
  • Zebulun = Dwelling or wished for habitation. The man of the open door. Gen 30
  • Zipporah = A little bird.The woman who wrongly opposed her husband. Ex 2
