THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

“I am the Lord your God”

No 1. You shall have no other gods before me.

No 2. You shall not make for yourself an image.

No 3. You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.

No 4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

    ………………………………………………………………….

No 5. Honour your Father and your Mother.

No 6. You shall not murder.

No 7. You shall not commit adultery.

No 8. You shall not steal.

No 9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.

No 10. You shall not covet…anything that belongs to your neighbour.”

If we look at the first four, these are all pointing upwards theoretically, to do with reverence and holiness with our attitude towards God. The next six are all pointing horizontally theoretically, to do with our attitude towards our fellow human beings or our neighbours.

These commandments where inscribed by the finger of God on two tablets of stone on Mount Sinai. The scripture can be read in Exodus Chapter 20. These were the basis for Hebrew Law. They are also reread and given out in Deuteronomy 5.

These are a simplified reading of the commandments, Jesus condenses them further in Matthew 22:37, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and love your neighbours as yourself.”

God bless
